It’s a fascinating topic, and recently, something my son mentioned sparked my curiosity about the sheer volume of synonyms for “money,” particularly in the French language. He suggested that “argent,” the French word for money, might boast the most synonyms of any word in the language. While definitively proving this is a challenge, my research certainly points to it being highly probable.
Consulting various dictionaries, including Larousse, Wikipedia, and conversations with French speakers, I’ve compiled a list of 102 words synonymous with “money” in French! Even if “argent” doesn’t hold the absolute record, that’s an astonishing number of variations for a single concept.
It makes you think about the importance of money in our lives and cultures if so many different terms have evolved to describe it. Think about English for a moment. We have cash, dough, bread, loot, funds, currency, riches, wealth, capital, and many more. Each carries slightly different connotations, reflecting our nuanced relationship with finances.

My French friend, JF, recognized about 80% of these words, regularly using terms like balles, braise, brouzouf, fric, pactole, pognon, radis, ronds, sous, and thunes. He mentioned it’s rare for him to use the formal “argent,” opting instead for these more colloquial and colorful alternatives. Even I, as a non-native speaker, find myself using “sous” more often than “argent” in everyday conversation.

French is known for its rich slang, perhaps more so than English, making this abundance of synonyms for money impressive, but not entirely unexpected. Chapeau!
