Find Your CA Unclaimed Money: Claims Process and Information

Claiming unclaimed property in California can take some time due to the necessary review of documentation. The State Controller’s Office allows up to 180 days to process a complete claim package. However, claims involving only cash can often be resolved much faster, typically within 30 to 60 days. More complex claims, such as those from heirs, multiple owners, or businesses, generally require the full 180-day period.

For claims involving securities, the process may take additional time after approval. Research is needed to assess any corporate actions like mergers, stock splits, or dividends that might affect the security’s value during the state’s holding period. While most security claims are paid within 120 days, complex cases needing extensive research can take longer.
