A Pennsylvania couple’s dog, Cecil, recently devoured $4,000 in cash meant for home improvements, proving that the saying about dogs eating homework isn’t just a myth. This seven-year-old doodle’s unexpected culinary adventure left his owners, Clayton and Carrie Law, with a costly and messy cleanup.
Cecil’s Expensive Feast: From Countertop to Canine Consumption
The Laws had withdrawn the cash for a home project, leaving it in an envelope on the kitchen counter. That’s when Cecil, a dog known more for cuddling than counter-surfing, made his move. Clayton Law recounts walking in on Cecil “standing over a pile of mutilated cash.” This unprecedented behavior shocked the couple, as Cecil had never shown interest in the counter before.

Initially, Cecil seemed unaffected. However, in the middle of the night, he began gagging and vomiting – a nightmare scenario for any pet owner. Clayton Law rushed to Cecil’s aid, discovering “a lot of like half-eaten… $100 bills and $50 bills” amidst the mess.
A Financial Puzzle: Recovering the Remains
Thus began the unpleasant task of sifting through Cecil’s waste for days. The Laws meticulously washed and reassembled the fragmented bills. They needed to recover at least 50% of each bill to receive reimbursement from their bank.

After days of painstaking work, the “diminishing returns” forced them to give up. Despite the setback, they managed to piece together enough bills to recoup $3,550 from their understanding bank. Clayton Law jokingly referred to the ordeal as “an expensive puzzle.”
A Common Canine Craving? Why Money Might Tempt Dogs
The bank assured the Laws that such incidents are common. Carrie Law explains that money absorbs numerous scents, especially in the food industry, which can be alluring to dogs with their keen sense of smell.

While their fence project remains on hold, the Laws plan to create art with the remaining money fragments. They’ve also shared Cecil’s story on social media, where it has gone viral, resonating with pet owners who understand the unpredictable nature of their furry companions. Carrie Law expresses relief that the story is bringing laughter and reminding people to love their pets, even when they make expensive mistakes.
