G Money Rapper, Rising Baton Rouge Hip-Hop Artist, Tragically Killed

The hip-hop community in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is once again in mourning after the untimely death of Garrett Burton, known to fans as Da Real Gee Money. The 22-year-old rapper, who was gaining significant momentum in the music scene, was fatally shot in his hometown this past Sunday, September 10th.

Police reports confirm that Gee Money was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot on the 1900 block of Dallas Drive in Baton Rouge around 1:30 a.m. Sgt. Don Coppola, the police spokesman, released this information, and local news outlet The Advocate also covered the tragic incident. As of now, law enforcement officials have not identified any suspects in connection with the shooting.

Da Real Gee Money was recognized as a promising talent in the rap world. Earlier in 2017, he was highlighted by XXL as one of the “12 Baton Rouge Rappers You Should Know,” signaling his growing influence and artistry. Activist Arthur “Silky Slim” Reed, who had met Gee Money previously, expressed his sorrow to The Advocate, describing the loss as “sad to see such a young, vibrant individual’s (life) cut so short.” Reed conveyed his prayers for Gee Money’s family, hoping that this tragedy might deter others from similar paths.

This devastating event follows closely on the heels of another Baton Rouge rapper’s murder, Zoe Realla, who was killed in April. Sadly, Gee Money and Realla are among several rappers who have lost their lives to violence in 2017. Atlanta rapper Young Mazi was murdered just last month, and DinnerWithJohn of Pivot Gang was fatally stabbed in February. The hip-hop community grapples with the hope that this distressing trend of violence will cease, and no more names will be added to this heartbreaking list.

The news of Da Real Gee Money’s death has sent shockwaves through the music industry and his fanbase, leaving behind a void in the Baton Rouge hip-hop scene and prompting reflection on the broader issue of violence affecting young artists.
