Best Full-Size Truck for the Money? Exploring the 2025 GMC Hummer EV Pickup

The Hummer nameplate carries a legacy of extravagance, dating back to the original H1 of the early 1990s. Born from the U.S. Military’s Humvee, its imposing dimensions and utilitarian design were its hallmarks. The subsequent H2 and H3 generations evolved with modern powertrains and chassis, yet retained the brand’s substantial footprint and perceived excess, until the Hummer marque was discontinued in 2010.

GMC resurrected the Hummer in 2022, this time as the all-electric Hummer EV Pickup, followed by an SUV variant (reviewed separately). Embracing excess in the electric age is no simple feat, but the 2025 GMC Hummer EV Pickup manages to achieve just that. Its battery pack is exceptionally large, boasting double the energy capacity of most EVs, significantly contributing to its hefty curb weight nearing 10,000 pounds.

To counteract this mass, the Hummer EV unleashes a formidable 1,000 horsepower, enabling it to sprint to 60 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds. Its considerable length, however, presents challenges in urban environments and tight parking situations, although the available four-wheel steering system mitigates some of this awkwardness.

This four-wheel steering proves particularly advantageous in off-road scenarios, where navigating tight trails and obstacles is crucial. As an off-road vehicle, the Hummer EV excels, offering up to 12 inches of ground clearance, a 2-foot fording depth, and the innovative CrabWalk feature to minimize multipoint turns. Coupled with GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system, the Hummer EV presents a compelling package.

However, the Hummer EV Pickup stands out as one of the least energy-efficient electric vehicles currently available. For those prioritizing efficiency, the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T present themselves as smaller, more economical alternatives with comparable or superior towing capabilities. GM’s own Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV are also positioned to potentially surpass the Hummer in these aspects. The Tesla Cybertruck, conversely, shares similarities with the Hummer EV Pickup in terms of sheer power, polarizing design, and debatable practicality.
